ProAmpac has expanded its fibre packaging operations in the US through the purchase of former International Paper bag converting sites, reflecting growing demand for recyclable materials across food and retail markets. The facilities, located in California, Oregon and Texas, increase the company’s ability to supply paper-based bags and containers as brands shift away from plastics.

The acquisition comes as consumer goods companies and foodservice operators look for packaging that combines environmental credentials with durability. Adam Grose, ProAmpac’s chief executive, said the additional capacity would help the group “meet rising demand while delivering the functionality customers expect”. His comments point to a central challenge for the sector: developing fibre products that can replace plastics while maintaining strength and barrier performance in daily use.

Analysts view the deal as part of a wider effort by packaging manufacturers to secure stable fibre supply and reinforce their production networks. Strong demand for paper has increased the importance of access to recyclable materials and flexible converting capacity. The added sites are expected to give ProAmpac more room to develop new formats and respond to changes in customer purchasing patterns.

International Paper’s decision to divest the operations reflects a continued focus on its core paper production business as environmental rules influence investment decisions across the industry. The move creates room for groups such as ProAmpac to accelerate work on next-generation fibre packaging.

Rivals including Novolex are likely to face pressure to expand their own fibre capabilities as expectations for recyclable packaging continue to grow. While fibre does not yet match all plastic functions, particularly in strength and moisture resistance, analysts expect recycling mandates and consumer preferences to support long-term demand for paper-based solutions.

ProAmpac’s enlarged network suggests that investment in manufacturing capacity will play a significant role in the next phase of sustainable packaging. Market participants will watch how the company deploys its new footprint as the sector adjusts to regulatory changes and rising demand for resilient, recyclable products.
